What Does The Visual Art Department Mean To Me??

the visual arts department is a square formatted courtyard with a fountain placed in the centre. For the project brief it was to design a new sculpture for the fountain but based around what i think the art department means to me..

the word that i thought described the art department in my view was FAMILY. As its quite a secluded area and the only people who really use the studios are art diploma students we all pretty much know each other so we all get along and have a laugh like one big art family. so i think that i am going to base my sculpture around this theme of family. it will also give me a good opportunity to express my skills and feelings in my work as it will be personal to me, but also the whole of the art department and i'm looking forward to putting my ideas out there and seeing what i can come up with.

SCULPTURE TRAIL

Sculpture Trail

On Wednesday the 19th i took a trip into Cambridge and following a trail i went round taking photos of different sculptures around the surroundings. i was fascinated by some of the sculptures that i saw on my trip but some did confuse me and wasn't sure if i would class it as a sculpture. For example i saw a photo of a crocodile carved into the brick wall and i didn't see how it was classed as a sculpture. There was such a wide variety of different sculptures such as ones that moved also ones that where imbedded in the side of shops. i think sculptures are important to the surroundings in towns and cities because they make the places more welcoming and comfortable.

i enjoyed the overall sculpture trail but some times found it quite hard to find where they were. i really liked the sculpture that was in the side of the john lewis shop. i thought it was quite a personal piece and i like the material they have used to create this piece and also the whole theme that is being portrayed of the mother and her baby.

Exhibition Review

As i have come to an end of the first 9 units out of the 18 yesterday i set up my own little exhibition where i documented my mounted work, books and 3D sculptured work. i preferred my work when i could see it mounted up on the walls. i started with my mount boards and then set out my books and sculpture work on plinths to give it different heights and make it look more interesting. i think my work holds a lot of colour and is quite eyecatching. i mounted my textiles pieces some of my photography and my mixed media natural form work. i opened some of my books on certain pages that i was pleased with which was also something else to look at. if i was to have another board i would mount up some of my drawing work and also computers in art. which are currently in my portfolio which you can just about see in the photograph behind my books. i would also hang some of my paintings that i have done on canvas's. overall i like how my work looks pinned up on the boards and i am pleased with the overall look.

PUBLIC ART

Public Art.

Public Art is artwork that is free for the public to view and speculate. it refers to works of art in any media that have been planned and executed with the specific intention of being sited or staged in the physical public domain, usually outside and accessible to all.

Public Art is made from sustainable materials as it is usually placed outside and can be there for long periods of time. i feel public art is quite abstract and mainly focused around a certain theme such as time, sound or light.

Once public art is in the public domain it no longer belongs to the artist but belongs to the public.

Longroad Art Exhibition

ART EXHIBITION

i visited the A2 Art Exhibition at my college (Longroad 6th form college in Cambridge). i am currently studying Art and Design National Diploma and in year 12 going into year 13. i felt the year 2's work was different to year 1's (12's) because it was more in depth and the analysis of their work was more detailed, also i felt like they had done more research into their chosen theme and taken a huge interest into their work.

Two students who's work interested me the most was Imogen Dungate and Ian Todd. Imogen based her work around 'DECAY' and what objects look like when left to decay. i really liked how she filled her work with detail and colours that she used in her pieces. Ian Todd focused on computer animated art and wacom drawings. His work was bold, bright and colourful and really eyecatching and was a pleasure to see his work.

i looked in SIX sketchbooks from various art students and picked TEN artists that i would like to explore further and who's work caught my attention.

i could tell that the students had taken their artists research work into consideration when creating their pieces of work and had an influence in the development of their work also. such as they had taken the skills that they had got from their chosen artists and used them in their work e.g the style of painting, the way a textile artist put an outfit together etc.

while walking around the exhibition i noticed some skills and materials and techniques that i hadn't used before such as the use of 3D objects and created art from them. And also the use of real food to see the decay and effects of it when left. i also haven't used a polaroid camera before.

the overall exhibition inspired me greatly and i chose THREE themes that i would be interested in exploring next year, these where:

My Scenario

I have been commissioned by Mike Junkovic to produce a dynamic and expressive pond feature/sculpture/fountain for use in the visual art pond, using sustainable and or recycled materials.
